Microsoft founder and one of the world's richest people, Bill Gates, once said he 'doesn't drink much beer', but this time he bought shares in a beer company.
The news agency Reuters reported that Bill Gates now owns 3.76 percent of Heineken Holding NV, one of the world's largest beer companies.
Bill Gates bought the shares on February 17, according to data provided by the Netherlands Financial Markets Authority. Heineken Holding owns the majority of the factories where Heineken beer is made. Gates bought the shares from the Mexican company Femsa.
Another information released on the same day said that FEMSA has sold all of the 1.8 million shares it holds in Heineken Holding. Among these shares, Gates bought 1 million 8 million shares, the price of which is 88 million 30 million euros or about 94 million US dollars at the current market price.
According to the Dutch stock market law, this information has to be disclosed.
In 2018, Gates said in an Ask Me Anything thread on Reddit that he "doesn't drink a lot of beer."
Bill Gates then added, 'Let's say I drink a light beer after a game like baseball. I do that to keep everyone happy. Sorry to those who really like beer.'
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation was contacted about the share purchase but was not immediately available for comment. This company was founded by the billionaire and his ex-wife.
